Augustin Berque, born in 1942 in Morocco, a French geographer and orientalist, is a retired director of studies at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris, where he has been teaching from 1979 to 2017. A member of the Academia europaea, and one of the inductees into the Earth Hall of Fame, Kyoto (which commemorates the 1997 protocol on greenhouse gas), he was in 2009 the first Westerner to receive the Fukuoka Grand Prize for Asian cultures.
